From my studio near Lewes in East Sussex, I create ink paintings and collages that convey my sense of wonder and appreciation for the natural world. Inspired by the outstanding environment and everyday natural 'treasures', my paintings have depicted the local downland, forests and coastline and celebrated the shapes, colours and patterns in flowers, fruit and shells.
Using lightfast inks my work evolves from working flat upon my studio table or floor using expressive, gestural brushstrokes and marks. I love using my inks for their rich, sparkling colours whether that’s with a brush, a blob or a splatter and have an experimental approach so I continue to grow as an artist with every discovery.
Originally from Brighton, I studied at Eastbourne College of Art and then Brighton Polytechnic/University (BA Illustration) in the late 1980’s, only returning to painting after a complete artistic break until 2013 when I returned to Sussex. In 2016 I joined the Chalk Gallery artist-led cooperative in Lewes and in 2019-20 became its Chairperson. As well as being part of the Chalk community I participate regularly in shows and exhibitions in and around Sussex and I occasionally run workshops on collage.
My work can be divided into collections each of which have a unique and distinctive voice. Most recent being my Framescape series which sees the subject spill out onto and over the frames - these are as much 3-D artworks as as they are 2-D paintings. My wood panels series are a collection of atmospheric paintings of imagined places but very much inspired by living in Sussex and my decorative collages is a series of work in which I use beautiful natural objects as the means of expressing and narrating a story.
